Russia's Vladimir Putin orders invasion of Ukraine

Russian troops have commenced a military offensive against Ukraine, entering its territories and bombing military targets anywhere around major cities.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on pre-dawn television announcement that Russia does not intend to seize Ukraine and insisted that its military should keep their arms down.

Strikes on Ukrainian military targets were observed shortly after. Ukraine said that "Putin has launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine".

Russian military vehicles were said to have crossed the border in several locations, from Belarus, in the north, south, and east. According to police, at least seven people have died as a result of Russian attacks. Another 19 people are unaccounted for.

Ukraine's President, Volodymyr Zelensky, declared martial law to be in effect throughout the country.

"No panic. We're strong. We're ready for anything. We'll defeat everyone, because we are Ukraine," the Ukrainian leader said in a video statement. He had made another last effort to thwart war ahead of Russia's attack, noting that Russia could initiate "a major war in Europe" and imploring Russian nationals to protest against it.

Warning sirens wailed throughout the capital, that has a total of roughly three million people.

In the night, many residents flee the city, and some took refuge in the Kyiv underground. A few countries in the region have started making plans to accept a sizable number of civilians.

"We don't understand what we should do now," one woman called Svetlana told the BBC. "We're now going to a place where we can be safe and we hope we can leave safely. We have family in Mariupol and now they're very nervous."

According to Mr. Zelensky, Russia initially targeted Ukraine's military facilities and border guard units. The Ukrainian forces then claimed that Russian military vehicles had entered the country at Kharkiv in the north, Luhansk in the east, Russian-annexed Crimea in the south, and Belarus as well.

The Ukrainian army stated that a number of airfields, including Kyiv's Boryspil international airport, as well as military base and storage facilities in Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Mariupol, had been bombed.

The Russian president initiated the "special military operation," reiterating a series of false statements he made earlier this week, insinuating that Ukraine's democratically elected government is to blame for eight years of mass slaughter.

He stated that the aim was the "de-Nazification" of Ukraine and to demilitarize it. Ukraine's president had previously questioned how a country that had lost eight million residents battling Nazis could enable Nazism. "How could I be a Nazi?" Mr Zelensky, who is Jewish, asked.

Despite Moscow's vehement denial, Ukraine's Western allies have given warning that Russia is planning an invasion. Sanctions were imposed by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Japan on prominent Russians, Russian banks, and members of parliament who supported the action.

In response to Russia's attack, US President Joe Biden stated that Washington and its allies would adhere a united and decisive manner to "an unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russian military forces" on Ukraine.

"President Putin has chosen a premeditated war that will bring a catastrophic loss of life and human suffering," Mr. Biden said. "The world will hold Russia accountable."

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was "appalled by the horrific events in Ukraine" and that President Putin "has chosen a path of bloodshed and destruction by launching this unprovoked attack".

Mr. Putin has directly accused the US and its allies of dismissing Russian desires to prevent Ukraine from entering the Nato military alliance and to provide Moscow with security guarantees.

Hours prior the invasion, Ukraine announced a state of emergency. According to Kyiv's mayor, checkpoints will be set up on city roads, and entry to government facilities will be prohibited. Personal document checks are implemented, military reservists are barred from leaving the country, mass gatherings are prohibited, and radio communication systems are restricted.
